When you think of a beach wedding, you probably think white candles, shells everywhere, an arched alter anchored in the sand, lapping waves, jackets worn without ties, windswept pale blue bridesmaid’s dresses, and high hung paper lanterns.
Cancel that, all of it. Because this NY beach wedding played into none of those clichés.
Mike and Sarah had a tough choice to make. They had to change their venue due to COVID outbreak from a mansion in the Hudson Valley to an open-air venue in Far Rockaway. And they had to do it fast. The Delta Variant was on the move, and, well, they wanted to get married. Clearly, they knew what they had to do. They had to go rogue.
Enter Rockaway Brewing Company. And photos of them with their dog in ornate, gold frames. But we’ll get to that in a second.
So, it was the Rockaway Brewery’s first wedding. Did I mention the couple had to improvise? I learned by listening to one of the toasts that the family had long ties to Far Rockaway going back many generations. Finally, I understood. There was a deep connection here. Suddenly, the draw of the location for the couple was clear. And it was very touching.
The long, wooden tables were beset with gorgeous decor. To enumerate: long runners, hot pink elements with vintage scarves, fun striped candles, and fans with which to fan oneself. The ceremony was between two roses of Sharon trees, and the guests sat in beach chairs. The bride walked through the sand barefoot and the groom wore white linen. The rings matched, their officiant was a friend and the vows were emotional and mature. Just heavenly.
Lastly, when the bride asked me if she needed to reapply her lipstick for family photos, Of course I said yes.
The groom materialized moments later with her tiny, bridal purse and handed it to her. Naturally, I asked how he knew where it was. The bride just grinned and said “Eight years.” And I died laughing.
