Modern Wedding Photography in the Roaring 20's Written and Shot by Angela Cappetta Are you ready to have your wedding in the roaring 20's? Why is searching for a modern wedding photographer so challenging? It can be for many reasons. After all, where at one time modern meant electric appliances, now, smart devices have made photography so simple that anyone can take a decent, well exposed picture. As written in an article about shooting on your own in Apartment Therapy, "You may be thinking: How hard could it be? I take pictures on my phone all the time on my phone and those come out great! Well, as it turns out, there’s a reason photographers are professionals. It can take years of training and practice to take a high-quality photo, and the professionals have quite a few tricks and tools up their sleeves that the average layman may not know anything about."

One of those "tricks" are lenses. It isn't really a trick. But it's a standard practice for pro shooters. The article continues, "...Wide angle lenses are commonly used in [group] photos to capture as much of the room as possible. The professionals know just how to accomplish this without making the room look distorted.

They’re especially important for small spaces, such as small rooms or tight spaces. Plus, with a greater depth of field, there’s opportunity for more light to fill the image."  Apartment Therapy

Hiring a luxury wedding photographer. Am I ready for the roaring 20's?

It may sound a tad reductivist, but it's true. A truly excellent, modern photographer has a suite of top gear. Each piece of gear does something a little bit different from the next. These differences, no matter how small, certainly add up. It helps form and create a whole look that each, individual wedding photographer is known for. If your photographer doesn't have a solid look to their work, it is a clue they don't know what they're doing. You want someone who has been working on honing it for years. It is individual, like a fingerprint. Now, none of this fancy training and equipment is any good unless your wedding photographer has to be able to know what they're seeing, and is able to translate that to their lens..Laurie Kratochvil, former Director of Photography at Rolling Stone, once said to me point blank, "You can't just send anyone to shoot anything. You have to know they have the eye to see it.  Assigning photography is all about understanding their strengths."

Laurie is right. Even within the luxury wedding photography pool, you will see beautiful work. However, each of us is able to shoot different events with a very different set of eyes. If you hand five top photographers the same suite of gear and sent us to shoot five identical events, we'd all come back with something very different. Know what style you both love, and hire accordingly.

Now for the fun part. We recently shot some weddings with a distinctively vintage 1920's theme, but translated into modern 2020's aesthetics. Think big palm fronds, fitted dresses, and scalloped dish ware. All of it is so gorgeous I don't even know where to begin. So I'll show you a few photographs of our recent ROARING 20's weddings.
