Vintage Style Photo Booth as Entertainment: What is Old is New Again

NYC Wedding Photography Entertainment? Yes! The team at Shipr Media is reconceptualizing box camera technology from 100 years ago. As entertainment.

CEO Georgy Keymakh says:

"Shipr is a portable photo studio of instant wedding photography. We work at private events with century-old box cameras. Furthermore, we set up the display at your event. A mobile photo laboratory uses primitive technology. Not unlike that used by street photographers of the early 20th century. So, by creating portraits in the spirit of old photo studios, we offer weddings, birthdays and corporate events an alternative to hiring a cartoonist (so last year). Our photo studio is charming and effective. No doubt, it will be a memorable attraction at your event. Not to mention, by providing real momento from your beautiful event frozen in time. By using film and photo paper, your guests will hold real wedding photography in their hands. IRL."

Tell us how you got the idea for Shipr.

My wife, Tamara, and I came up with the idea of an old-school photo studio from several sources.First, Tamara and I studied photography and art history in university; we wrote articles about photography in magazines and participated in contemporary art and photo exhibitions. At the same time, we worked as wedding/event photographers in Moscow, Russia. That industry demanded ultra-sugary photoshop effects that were very far from our ideals and tastes. We realized that we could use our darkroom printing skills to change the rules and offer the industry something new. The other benefits were zero competition, and no need to constantly upgrade our equipment, as we did for commercial photography. However, the idea itself was not enough because there wasn't any equipment, devices and materials suitable for our goals. So, it took a couple years to develop the whole process, find vintage cameras and rare portable developing darkrooms. We also had to invent our own cassettes, timers and other stuff; adapt chemicals, paper, etc.

Do you use real collodian and glass?

Sometimes we use the collodion process on glass or tin, but our main feature is the special photographic paper and an authentic, seven-step developing process. The process is a huge attraction for events, as it is very entertaining to watch. We’re also going to start developing photographs in color, which will be ready in March.

How many portraits can you make per hour?

We can make about 50 shots per hour, but our capacity depends on conditions and circumstances. We can shoot up to 70 shots per hour, if we can develop them a bit later (e.g. a welcoming party before the show).

When do you plan to expand into NYC wedding photography services?

We plan to launch in Fall 2020.
