Words and Pictures by Angela Cappetta
Grit, determination, focus. This is ballet. Thus by observing these trainees I am in awe. Their determination is utterly inspirational. Specifically, I have had the privilege of being allowed access to the Joffrey Ballet Touring Company. Hauling my axe, aka my gear bag, up 5 flights to the dance studio. I set up and start firing. So, when I see the grit in their eyes, physical supremacy they demonstrate, they show me their graciousness in welcoming me.
These dancers are super human creatures. Furthermore, dancers possess hearts of gold. One has to be giving to be any kind of true artist. It is all about perfecting your instrument for others to love and be inspired. What an artist gets is the unique ability to give away, to provide an experience.
This project was two years of me trying not to get kicked in the head. It is in managing to succeed in that attempt that I have been lucky enough to sell these pictures well. Moreover, I believe they fulfill a need. Perhaps the need is the latent desire to move like they do. If one were able to move like this easily we wouldn’t need dancers, now would we?
Then, without further ado, here are Joffrey Ballet updates. As you may know, I’ve been shooting the trainees in the ballet studios for about 2 years. To this end, here are some snippets of a recent training week. Also, just found out I’ll be featured on the MacDowell Colony’s Artistic Conclusions column . Enjoy!
