Giving Thanks
Words + Pictures by Angela Cappetta. Giving Thanks.
There is so much for which to be thankful. Things like a grandmother’s tablecloth embroidered with family signatures. Or a baby.
But occasionally, it is celebrated with family and friends at a Brooklyn walk-up in the hood.
Giving Thanks
Thanksgiving. It occurs on the fourth Thursday in November. It is loosely based on the colonial Pilgrims’ 1621 harvest meal. Also, the holiday continues to be a day for Americans to gather. For most, it is a day of feasting, football and family.

What is Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving, occurring on the fourth Thursday in November, is based on the colonial Pilgrims’ 1621 harvest meal. Moreover, this holiday continues to also be a day for Americans to gather for a day of feasting.
In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared a harvest feast that is known as the first Thanksgiving for the colonies.
For over two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. So, after 1890, representations of the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag began to reflect a shift of interest in the 1621 celebration.
Furthermore, by the beginning of the 20th century, the Pilgrims and the Thanksgiving holiday were used to teach children. The continued teaching also included Thanksgiving as metaphor for freedom and citizenship.
