So, this fashion look book was shot in-studio. For this project, a pared down concept was employed. Hard light, rich shadows, loose hair. This particular designer chose a no-makeup look. Importantly, I insisted on a woman of color. We were lucky, in that we booked an extraordinary woman. Our model, the incomparable Nidhi Sunil. Nidhi is a South Indian model, actress, and activist. Nidhi was born in Kerala and is known for her role as Samira in the Indian drama film Kaash. Currently, Nidhi is the face of L’oreal Paris, and is the first South Indian woman to hold this esteemed title. Nidhi is amazing, and I loved shooting her for this project.
When I arranged the casting call, I specifically requested the agencies send us talent of varying ethnicities. Furthermore, if you haven’t noticed already, the clothes are exquisite. This is international style, fine tailoring, and day to night design at its highest. I’ve never shot jackets so expertly made before. After a fashion, it’s a joy to experience true workmanship like this. And, furthermore, it was my utmost joy to shoot fashion in a way that completely celebrates brown girls. All the brown girls out there, celebrate who you are like Nidhi does. Her example helps us all rise up. Yes!
