Shooting City Hall Weddings Effectively

Photographer focusing a lens in daylight

Shooting City Hall weddings is essentially shooting a simple event in a complicated place. The essentials are:

  • two cameras with two different focal length lenses - not zooms
  • both camera with a minimum of 32MP; and
  • a combo of available light and flash technique

City Hall weddings are gorgeous. The people watching alone is worth the trip.

I started off using smaller camera bodies so I could be faster, but then I learned that a few pounds doesn't really matter. One has to shoot athletically. Staying fit helps a shooter dash around silently yet effectively.

The photographer who paces themselves on instinct. A top shooter doesn't let a any obstacle get it the way of the most advantageous spot. The critical thing to remember is to know where to stand.

Your Gear

Don't use low end gear. It will show. Make sure you have invested in the best version of whatever gear outfit works for you. Then, buy the best bag. I keep my hardware on the minimal side. The work needs to speak for itself.

Tons of flashy gear doesn't make you look more professional, it makes you look like you don't know what you're doing. Having just a few select pieces of the best of the best gear and a couple of versions of strong but lightweight strobes is all you'll need to shoot comprehensively on any City Hall wedding or location/elopement job.

Happy Shooting!
